Pa. lawmakers target package theft, could impose tougher penalties
A bill that would impose specific penalties for mail and package theft in Pennsylvania passed out of the state Senate and awaits a vote in the state House. It would alter current law, which charges offenders with theft based entirely on the price of the stolen mail or objects. The proposal, however, would impose harsher charges for mail and package theft, increasing them based on previous convictions and the value of the mail contents. This is in response to the growing trend of package theft, which impacted nearly two million Pennsylvania residents in 2022.
