Pennsylvania's population falls as Americans migrate to the South

The population of Pennsylvania fell from 13 million to 12.97 million from July 2021 to July 2022 – a decrease of about 0.3%, according to the latest U.S. Census Bureau estimates. The loss of 40,000 residents was the fourth largest decline, but Pennsylvania still ranks fifth in total population behind California, Texas, Florida and New York. The U.S. population rose 0.4% to 333.29 million, an increase of 1.26 million people. That was a rebound from a historically low rate of change between 2020 and 2021.
