PGW to demolish 212-foot tall tank that's visible from I-95
Philadelphia Gas Works is demolishing the cage-like gasometer structure at its Liquefied Natural Gas Processing Plant in Port Richmond. The 212-foot-tall structure, visible from I-95 along the Delaware River, was built in 1954 for natural gas storage and to control the pressure of natural gas in PGW’s distribution mains. Gasometers were originally developed to control the pressure and storage of manufactured coal and water gas.
