South Philly native, jazz legend James Mtume dies at 76



Jazz and R&B icon James Mtume, a native of South Philadelphia, has died at the age of 76 after a long and influential career that included collaborations with Miles Davis, Don Cherry, Herbie Hancock and Duke Ellington. Together with Reggie Lucas, Mtume created a sound often described as “sohphistifunk.” He’s best known for the 1983 single “Juicy Fruit,” which was famously sampled by the late Notorious B.I.G.
