Philadelphia to build 1,000 affordable houses as part of new homeownership program



Philadelphia is set to build 1,000 new affordable houses in neighborhoods throughout the city using private developers. The 3-bedroom, 1.5-bathroom homes will cost between $190,000 to $230,000 to purchase, with mortgages at around $1,200 for first-time home buyers.

New Jersey state officials make $10 million investment to curb spike in car thefts



New Jersey will spend $10 million in American Rescue Plan Act funding to expand the state’s license plate recognition technology in order to curb a spike in car theft in both urban and suburban areas of the state. The state will also allow law enforcement to use car chases to stop vehicle thieves.

Coast Guard's search for missing crew member in Delaware River suspended



The U.S. Coast Guard has called off its search for a 30-year-old man who fell into the river on Saturday morning. The 30-year-old crew member was on a Singapore-flagged ship and was last accounted for between 5 and 6:30 a.m. He was reported missing at 7 a.m. and the search started shortly thereafter. The Coast deployed a 29-foot boat from Philadelphia and a helicopter from Atlantic City for the search, which last more than three hours.

Black bear spotted in Plymouth Meeting leads to safety warning and traps set



A black bear was spotted near Narcissa Park in Plymouth Meeting on Friday. Officials released a safety notice which says to not approach the creature and that it likely won’t harm anyone if it’s left alone. In recent years, black bears have also been spotted in other Philly suburbs more frequently than in the past. One even made it into Philadelphia city limits in 2019. When caught by officials, the creatures are generally tranquilized and moved to a a rural setting.
